On Sundays after church the whole family would go across the road to play baseball in the field with our neighbor. This type of physical play bought family together as a team. I would have to take turns at hitting the ball, then run to the base, after reaching the base I had to keep watch on the ball to make sure I ran to the next base. This physical play provides role models, and competition among peers as well as family members. It also builds confidence and self esteem that is essential in child development. It support gross motor and help develop large muscles. This type of play also teaches how to enter in a relationship, assert themselves, and respond to someone else. We played a lot using our imagination back then. We would go outside and pretend to be doctor or a teacher (those were the only role models we knew then). I remember at school we had at least an hour of outside time to run, and interact with our classmates. Children play today is cut back they do not get enough time outside to enjoy the sun. The lack of physical activities has
caused a high rate in children obesity. Parents are in such a hurry maintaining their family until family play does not happen a lot.
My brothers and sisters would play together running and flying kites in the field.

I really liked your photos that show outdoor play and your examples from your childhood! It's great to experience the outdoors as a child, its provides so much freedom to explore and understand the world around us. I totally agree that children today don't spend as much time outside, but rather play indoors on video games and TV. It's a shame it isn't emphasized more that getting out can be enjoyable and beneficial to kids motor, social, and cognitive development.
